What type of product is an airbag inflator?
The inflator — part of an automobile's airbag inflator system — generates gas to inflate the airbags. It requires advanced technology to inflate the bag with gas in about 0.02 seconds, less than a blink of an eye. This technology represents a summary of the Daicel Group's expertise with explosives.
We manufacture three types of inflators: the Pyro Type ignites an explosive to generate gas; the Stored Gas Type releases highly pressurized gas; and the Hybrid Type combines both technologies. In recent years, a growing number of airbags have been installed in various locations in addition to the driver's side, thus increasing the size of the market. The Pyro Type is ideal for weight reduction, the Stored Gas Type for accelerated gas release, and the Hybrid Type for a combination of both characteristics, depending on customer needs and applications.
What are the strengths of the Daicel Group?
Our strengths are threefold: the competitive advantage of offering all three types of inflators; the capability — common to many Japanese companies — to supply high-quality products; and a global development capability through production sites in Japan, the U.S.A., Thailand, Poland and China.
This five-polar global system has firmly established the Group as a leader, as reflected in our No. 2 market share in the global inflator market and the No. 1 market share among inflator manufacturers excluding airbag systems. In 1988, when product demand was growing, we founded Daicel Safety Systems, an affiliate in Japan to manufacture inflators exclusively; the company started commercial production the following year. In the late 1990s, we began supplying all Japanese-affiliated automobile manufacturers, notably Toyota Motor Corporation. From 2002 to 2006, we pioneered globalized production, establishing a structure capable of rapidly supplying products to local affiliates of Japanese companies.
What are the challenges for the future?
In order to further strengthen our current five-polar system, we plan to implement common improvement initiatives globally throughout the five countries while sharing information among the various sites. We will also focus on the Toyota Production System and key priority of safety as well as our "3S" approach of tidying, arranging, and cleaning (seiri, seiton, and seisou). In Japan, we will also promote product development in various categories by employing current inflator technologies.
