Integrated Production Center (IPC)
Integrated Production Center (IPC)

The Integrated Production Center (IPC) was established in the Aboshi Plant of the Himeji Production Sector and began integrated operation in March 2000. Our production innovation initiative ? introduced as “Daicel Production Innovation” ? has achieved substantial productivity improvements. Our approach has attracted attention within the processing sector and several companies in Japan are now introducing it.

Looking to business, and specifically our cellulosic derivatives business, we established Ningbo Da-An Chemical Industries Co., Ltd. in China in 2005 to manufacture and sell cellulose acetate and acetic anhydrate. In addition, in 2006, we tripled the production capacity of Xi’an Huida Chemical Industries Co., Ltd. and constructed an integrated production system to manufacture products from cellulose acetate to acetate tow in China.

In Japan, part of the premises of the Sakai Plant was expropriated for construction of the Yamatogawa Line of the Hanshin Expressway. The cigarette filter tow manufacturing facility of the Sakai Plant, therefore, was transferred to the Ohtake Plant in 2007, and the capacity of the facility was increased. In addition, demand for tri-acetyl cellulose (TAC) increased rapidly due to expansion of the LCD market. We, therefore, constructed an additional cellulose acetate manufacturing facility in the Aboshi Plant in 2004 to enhance our TAC business. In addition, tri-acetyl cellulose (TAC) manufacturing facilities were newly established at the Ohtake Plant in 2008, thus creating the twin hub system at Aboshi and Ohtake.

As for our organic chemicals business, we acquired a company in China in 2002 to manufacture and sell sorbic acid and other products. In addition, acetic anhydrate manufactured by Ningbo Da-An Chemical Industries Co.,
Ltd. was intended to meet significant global demand. In 2009, we constructed the ethyl acetate manufacturing facility using esterification process in our Ohtake Plant and are making efforts to improving the competitive edge of the Acetyl products.

Regarding the optical isomer separation (chiral separation) business, chiral medical supplies have undergone rapid global development and have been outsourced to China and India. In light of this trend, we established Daicel Chiral Technical Service Centre in Shanghai in January 2006 and in Hyderabad in the central south of India in February 2007. Considering the results of test marketing in these areas, we determined that demand for chiral compounds would increase rapidly in Asia. As a result, we established Daicel Chiral Technologies (China) Co., Ltd. in Shanghai in August 2007 and established Daicel Chiral Technologies (India) Pvt. Ltd. in Hyderabad in April 2008.

Regarding our plastics business, we spun off the resin compounding business in order to establish Daicel Polymer Ltd. and spun off the plastic sheet forming business to establish Daicel Pack Systems, Ltd. in 2001. In 2004, we spun off the packaging film business to establish Daicel Value Coating Ltd., and reorganized the synthetic resin business. In engineering plastics, Polyplastics Co., Ltd. established PTM Engineering Plastics (Nantong) Co., Ltd. in the city of Nantong, China, as a joint venture for the manufacture of polyacetal resin. This company is now expanding its business base as a top manufacturer of engineering plastics in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2006, Topas Advanced Polymers GmbH in Germany acquired the cyclic olefin copolymer business from Ticona to promote its business in the optical field.

In March 2008, Daicel transferred Dainippon Plastics Co., Ltd. to Takiron Co., Ltd. And Mikuni Plastics Co., Ltd. were transferred its entire business to Aron Kasei Co., Ltd. in October of the same year. In the pyrotechnic devices business, we established Daicel Safety Systems America, LLC as a foothold in the U.S. market in 2000. This joint venture is developing the automobile airbag inflator business. In addition, we established Daicel Safety Systems (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in Thailand in 2002. In 2004, we established Daicel Safety Systems Europe Sp.z o.o. in Poland as our European foothold and Daicel Safety Systems (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. in China to meet the requirements of the expanding car industry. Through these initiatives, we are taking steps to manufacture the optimum product quantities to meet the requirements of global markets.
