Cellulose Acetate

In recent years, cellulose acetate, a resin derived from cellulose obtained from wood pulp or cotton, has gained increasing attention as an environmentally friendly material.
Cellulose acetate is a substance with excellent biological safety. Products such as fibers, molded parts, coating films, and coatings made from cellulose acetate exhibit excellent resistance to sunlight, particularly UV radiation, and do not easily degrade, making them suitable for long-term use.
In addition, cellulose acetate is inherently flame-retardant and exhibits high thermal stability, with softening and carbonization occurring at approximately 230–300°C. It also provides excellent chemical resistance to weak organic and inorganic acids, animal and vegetable oils, gasoline, and similar substances.
Furthermore, its low electrical conductivity and high volume and surface resistivity make cellulose acetate an excellent electrical insulating material.

Testing items and Testing methods

Property Test Method
Moisture Dry sample in an oven for 2hr at 105℃, and weigh accurately.
Combined Acetic Acid After extracting the acetic acid content in the sample, perform neutralization titration.
6% Viscosity Measure the time of flow at 25℃ with an Ostwald viscometer.
Boiling Water Stability After extracting the acetic acid content in the sample with boiling water, neutralization titration is performed.
Ash content The sample is put in a crucible, carbonized with an electric heater, and ashed in an electric furnace.

Certifications

Our cellulose acetate products are certified under the “Biomass Plastic” and “Biodegradable Plastic” as defined by Japan BioPlastics Association (JBPA).

TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium OK compost INDUSTRIAL

We have obtained TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium's "OK compost INDUSTRIAL" certification for selected products.

  • In a compost environment at 58℃, it achieves a biodegradation rate of over 90% within six months.

TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium OK biodegradable MARINE

We have obtained TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium's "OK biodegradable MARINE” certification for selected products.

  • It is certified to be biodegradable in seawater and safe for the environment (marine life).

JBPA

Japan BioPlastics Association (JBPA) is a private organization established in 1989 with the aim of promoting the widespread use of bioplastics (a general term for biodegradable plastics and biomass plastics) and establishing testing and evaluation systems. Daicel is a member company of Japan BioPlastics Association (JBPA).

FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC)

We have obtained FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for selected products and are continuously expanding our range of certified products.

  • The Forest Stewardship Council®, a global NGO, sets standards of well-managed, sustainable forests. FSC® chain of custody certification is a credible confirmation for products with environmentally responsible sources to access the market.

PEFC COC

We use wood-derived cellulose as a raw material in some grades, which has certification from a forest certification organization.
We have obtained PEFC COC certification* for some of our products and strive to comply with the requirements of PEFC COC.

  • The PEFC Forest Certification Program (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes.) Mechanism that provides accurate and verifiable information that forest are sourced from PEFC certified sustainably managed forests, and/or PEFC controlled sources.

Pulp Procurement Policy for Forest Conservation

Cellulose acetate is a biomass material made from wood pulp and cotton; specifically, it comprises plant-based cellulose materials chemically modified with acetic acid. It is used in fibers, films, plastics, and a wide variety of other applications. This material is manufactured only by Daicel Corporation in Japan.
In order to meet the needs of textile industry, Daicel has established the following "Pulp Procurement Policy" to use wood pulp in the production of cellulose acetate, which is supplied as a raw material for SOALON Corporation's triacetate fiber "Soalon™," and engages in responsible procurement.

Pulp Procurement Policy

We will prioritize procurement from suppliers who demonstrate consideration for biodiversity and the global environment.
We will preferentially purchase pulp sourced from timber grown in appropriately managed forests that have been granted forest certifications from third-party environmental organizations.
We will not procure wood pulp from the following forests or regions:

  • natural forests that do not readily regenerate, such as the primeval boreal forests of Canada, Alaska, and Russia; the tropical forests and peat bogs of Indonesia, the Amazon, and West Africa; and other endangered ancient forests;
  • illegally logged forests;
  • illegally registered forests;
  • areas where logging practices violate the rights of indigenous peoples and local residents;
  • plantations established after 1994; and
  • wood that has been genetically modified.

If we determine that the raw material we have procured has been sourced from a protected forest identified above or is the product of illegal logging operations, we will reexamine our supply chain and modify our procurement methods. We will also commit to reviewing our business relationships with our suppliers when we deem it necessary.
We will collaborate with various organizations (such as Canopy) on the above initiatives in the interests of forest protection and will promote sustainable forest management and the ongoing protection of endangered forests.

Recognizing, Respecting and Protecting Human Rights and the Rights of Local Communities

Daicel expects its suppliers to respect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognize the right of indigenous peoples and local communities to use the territories, land, and resources under their management and afforded to them by laws and customs. Daicel supports the right of indigenous peoples to free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) in the allocation of new logging concessions or woodlot development. Should a complaint, dispute, or human rights violation occur, we will require the supplier concerned to resolve and correct it through a transparent and consensual processes and to provide accountability.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Daicel recognizes the importance of forests as carbon sinks and supports efforts to reduce the loss of forests offering high value as stores of carbon. Therefore, we urge our suppliers to avoid harvesting in such areas and give priority to doing business with suppliers who adopt proactive strategies to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
