Amines are used as a raw material for pharmaceuticals.

Among substances produced by chemical synthesis, there are molecules called optical isomers that look very similar—like a right hand and a left hand—but do not perfectly overlap when superimposed. When these molecules are passed through a device called a chiral column, they can be cleanly separated into “right-handed” and “left-handed” forms. This separation technology is useful for analyzing components in pharmaceuticals and foods, as well as for isolating only the desired form.
